OVERVIEW

The Sales Tax Accountant is responsible for accurately preparing and filing all sales, use, hotel and other state and local tax and business returns for various entities in over 80 tax jurisdictions.

JOB DUTIES

  • Calculates, prepares and files sales, use and hotel occupancy returns
  • Prepares monthly sales and use tax accruals
  • Researches and resolves tax-related discrepancies
  • Administers and processes sales, use, and hotel tax compliance, remittances, and reporting requirements for all Sun locations in the United States and Canada
  • Ensures accuracy of all returns, worksheets and accrual calculation requirements to minimize assessments and penalties
  • Completes sales, use, and hotel tax registrations and license renewals; maintains a listing and copies of all licenses, registrations, resale certificates, and exemption certificates
  • Prepares responses to requests for information from outside taxing authorities
  • Reconciles and analyzes monthly and quarterly sales and use tax accounts for all entities; works with Accounting department to investigate and resolve any issues
  • Troubleshoots any sales and use tax inconsistencies requiring timely investigation, abatement and resolution
  • Monitors accounting systems to ensure correct rates and tax rules are updated
  • Researches sales and use tax requirements for acquisitions in new jurisdictions; documents research and makes recommendations to management for implementation of new sales, use, and hotel taxes
  • Works with outside vendors, IT, Accounting and Internal Audit to ensure tax is correctly calculated and remitted on all applicable transactions
  • Assists with department records retention, assuring accuracy and appropriate maintenance of department records, both physical and electronic
  • Assists with personal property tax and annual report filings as needed
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, or related field (Required)
  • 2 years experience in a tax or accounting role, preferably in public accounting
  • 6 months prior experience with sales & use tax at a large or multi-state firm
  • Basic knowledge of tax concepts in a multi-entity/multi-state structure
  • Advanced knowledge of bookkeeping principles and practices
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple competing high priority tasks
  • Excelled computer proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
